The history of Herning City Hotel
The limited company Herning Missionshotel was founded in 1896, making it one of Herning's oldest companies. Its purpose was to offer a quiet, peaceful place to stay in the town. The company bought the property of the lawyer Valeur on the corner of Bredgade and Skolegade. For more than 120 years, there has been a hotel on the same corner.
The purchase came with a touch of royal glamour: this is where King Christian IX (the "father-in-law of Europe") stayed when he visited Herning with the Crown Prince in 1875.
By 1901 the premises had become too small, and the present hotel was built on the corner. Since then, one rebuild and extension has followed another: district heating, hot water in the first five rooms and the conversion of the coach house into car garages. In 1955 the wing along Skolegade was built, which is where you arrive at reception today.
From the start, the business was split between the leaseholder Olsen, who ran the hotel, and the stableman Nielsen, who ran the coaching stable (rejsestalden). Today the buildings are owned by a foundation whose main purpose is to secure the hotel's future. On 1 November 2020, Vinnie and Jesper Stadsvold Olesen took over the running of the hotel.
